Ponds are beautiful, most of all when the edges are well maintained. This could mean using a tractor to move material or getting up close with your mower. So, what happens when your mower or tractor goes swimming?
What if my mower or tractor gets stuck in my pond?
Funny enough we see it about twice a year. Maybe heavy rain mixed with tall grass leaves you sliding or the ground is softer then you expected. Turn the unit off right away and remove it by other means. Once you carefully, quickly and safely get your unit removed it is time for a check up right away before running it again. Water and engines don't normally play nice. Water can get in tons of places from bearings to breathers and can cause simple repairs to catastrophic failures and leave lasting effects if not resolved right away.
Fluids
Fluids are the life blood of your unit. If your equipment takes a dip it is highly recommended to change and flush all your fluid systems. You can drain fluids into clean containers and inspect fluid for debris and contaminates, including water in oils. If you have any question, stay on the safe side and replace fluids and filters. - Water in fuel can case no start issues and long term carb trouble. - Water in oil can case premature ware, major failures and void warranty. - Water in the transmission can very easily cause moving parts to ware and lock up as well as void warranty. - Water in the coolant systems can cause the fluid to freeze and debris or sediment can cause clogs or ware holes that lead to overheating as well as void warranty.
Bearings
It is a great time to break out the grease gun and equipment manual. If you are not already, make yourself aware of all the grease fittings and follow instructions to grease your unit per manufacture instructions.
